Why Parents Refuse Vitamin K For Their Babies

In a pregnant woman, the foetusderives all the nutrition from the mother. Nutritional elements pass through the placenta and reach the foetus in the womb. However, the foetus does not get adequate amount of a very important nutrient– Vitamin K. Adequate amount of this nutrient does not pass through the placenta. Vitamin K is very important for blood clotting. The blood clotting factors that help the blood clot and stop bleeding depend on the level of Vitamin K. So, low level of Vitamin K predisposes your baby to the risk of unhindered bleeding. Although rare, few babies do suffer from intracranial bleeding, a potentially fatal condition. So parents refusing vitamin k for newborn babies should think deeply about vitamin k shots. They should consult other doctors and relatives about the benefits of this shot.

The lack of vitamin K works out to be a real medical issue. One of the major benefits of vitamin K is that it prevents the blood to clot. When you do not supplement your kid with vitamin K, the chances are that deficiency bleeding might occur, which tends to occur in the first year of life and may stretch to 12 years.

Vitamin K does not incorporate itself into the breast milk and it is seen in most babies who are breastfeed a lot. The supplementation of vitamin K has not gone on to yield effective results  as being stable as the side effects are minimum in nature. Most of the health care providers will allow you to nurse the baby when they are providing the shot of injection to the baby.

Hemorrhagic diseases of new borns

Infants carry very low levels of Vitamin K. This prevents blood clotting and increases the risk of a type of hemorrhagic disease in them. It is also known as Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding. This is a fatal condition where infants may experience intracranial or other types of bleeding. Such a condition can present as early as within 24 hours of birth or as late as 6 months after birth. If the bleeding occurs within hours of delivery then it mostly presents with a bruising or bleeding from the umbilicus. However, it is the late presentation that is the most concerning. In cases where it occurs weeks or months after birth of the infant it may present with intracranial bleeding almost in 50% cases. This is a real fatal condition and the reason is certainly a food for thought of reasons for refusal of Newborn vitamin K

The reason

Pregnant mothers who usemedicines like anticonvulsants or isoniazids, which interfere with vitamin K metabolism in her body, predispose their babies to this risk. Also, breast milk, the elixir of life for an infant, does not contain this all important vitamin.

The need

The need is to give a shot of vitamin K to the baby just after its delivery. This will make sure that even if there is a deficiency of this vital element in the infant’s body it will be compensated for.
